ARTIST STATEMENT
The exhibited photographs represent and reveal the perspectives and experiences of several artists with disabilities. The artists contributing to Focal Point are all participants in iXpress, Aspire of Western New York’s expressive arts program for individuals with developmental disabilities.
Photography is the most recent addition to the iXpress program’s list of artistic components. Using adaptive tools and assistive technologies, iXpress participants have found a new means—digital photography—to express their exceptional experiences in the world, as they are all exceptional individuals.
In addition to the installed photographs, the opening reception will include projections of those photographs that do not appear on the walls at Merge. Furthermore, their original stories, poems, and songs will accompany the slide show. Some individuals will read or perform their narrative pieces live.
