The Series
The Wheel to Reel bicycle film series was created in an effort to celebrate the strong and ever growing bicycle community in Buffalo promoting healthy, environmentally sustainable, and community friendly transportation.
For The Family
This year's events will kick off at 7pm with games, crafts, a photo booth, and dunk tank (on the last night) for the whole family to enjoy a nice evening out together each Wednesday in July. Movies will begin at dark (around 9pm).
The Movies
July 6th – Goonies, 1985
Classic tale in which a group of kids in a small Oregon town are all about to move away because the rich families in town are going to tear down their houses, known as the "goondocks" to build a golf course. As Mikey, the main boy, tries to think of a way to come up with the money to save their houses, all his friends and him rush up to the attic to check out his dad's museum collection. They find a doubloon and a real treasure map of the famous pirate, One-Eyed Willy. The kids embark on a treasure hunt on their bicycles.
July 13th – Quicksilver, 1986
Jack Casey ('Kevin Bacon' ) used to be a hot-shot stock market whiz kid. After a disastrous professional decision, his life in the fast lane is over. He loses his nerve and joins a speed delivery firm, which relies on bicycles to avoid traffic jams of San Francisco. Can Jack regain his nerve and his self-respect, and rebuild his life on a more sound basis?
July 20th – Napoleon Dynamite, 2004
A listless and alienated teenager decides to help his new friend win the class presidency in their small western high school, while he must deal with his bizarre family life back home. One of many hilarious scenes in this film includes Napoleon riding his bike up a home-made ramp.
July 27th – The Wizard of OZ, 1939
In this charming film based on the popular L. Frank Baum stories, Dorothy and her dog Toto are caught in a tornado's path and somehow end up in the land of Oz. Here she meets some memorable friends and foes in her journey to meet the Wizard of Oz who everyone says can help her return home and possibly grant her new friends their goals of a brain, heart and courage.
The Perks for Bikers
We will give out weekly prizes for movie viewers who ride their bikes to the festival. Prizes will include gift certificates from Merge, Bicycle Benefits and Green Options Buffalo Memberships. We will also have a “festival prize” given away on the 27th, with the lucky winner going home with a newly refurbished bike!
